A bad day at the office for Spartacus, who were trashed away to Enköping in the league on Saturday. It was one of those days where Spartacus played well below their abilities, and Enköping were firing on all cylinders. In particular, the ERK back three had a great afternoon.
Not too many positives for Spartacus, however, a period of 15 minutes just after half time saw the visitors rally and score two tries through the pack and have one try disallowed. Strangely, Spartacus dominated in the scrum all afternoon, turning over 4 or 5 ERK scrums, and holding on to their own. However, nothing else seemed to work, with the pack and back-line looking sluggish. The long trip up on a coach was showing.
As always, Spartacus fought to the end, against tough odds. In the last play of the game, Spartacus forced ERK to spill a ball over their own try line (thanks to a strong scrum). It should have been a try for Spartacus as the ball bounced all over the dead-ball area. However, in a move that seemed to sum up the day, a Spartacus player (he doesn’t deserve to be named) hesitated and the ERK winger pounded on the ball and ran the full length of the pitch to score under the posts.
A hard day for the team, but Spartacus have bounced back from worse!

Spartacus travelled to Stockholm with a very depleted side on Saturday, and paid the price as a result. Hammarby were two tries up very early on in the match. After those two scores, Spartacus were on top of things for about 10 minutes, using the front 5 to good effect and winning a penalty that was converted by Gareth Day. Shortly afterwards, prop Emmanuel Gustavsson received a punch in the eye and was unable to see out of it. The reff examined the eye and decided that the scrums should be uncontested. Hammarby had control for the rest of the half, scoring some excellent back-line tries in the process.
In the second half, Hammarby did not have things all their own way. Some excellent tackles from Robert Tabell meant that they had to work hard for scores. Scrum half Gareth Day had his nose broken and had to come off. As a result, the spartacus pack played even tighter than in the first half. Johanes Kempe scored a try off a linout from short range. While the backline was struggling because of players out of position, they did manage a score, with the ever-present Niclas Fremling scoring a great try under the posts.
It was disapointing that Spartacus could only send 15 players up to Stockholm, and unfair on Hammarby who deserve to play against the best that Spartacus can offer. However, I’d like to focus more on the players who did make the trip up, in particular Robert Tabel and Simon Zakarian, both of whom were sick and only travelled when they heard that Spartacus were sending 13 players up. The boys that showed up played with heart and passion, but couldn’t compete for 80 minutes against a full squad.

Spartacus travel to Stockholm for a league match against table-toppers Hammarby. The game kicks off at 15:00. If you’re up in the capital city for the weekend, why not pop over and support Spartacus?
Good luck to all the boys!

Spartacus recorded their 3rd win in this season’s elite series, and booked a place in the play-offs in the process. A large crowd turned out to watch this derby match, and they weren’t dissapointed. Both sides produced some excellent rugby, but it was Spartacus who best played to their strengths and never really looked like losing this game. Full Story »
